From Figma to React

A belated Happy New Year. It’s been a mild winter here, and we’ve mostly stayed local: no big trips, just time at home.

The quiet has given me time to look back at how I got here.

Last summer, Figma Make came out, and I was hooked. You describe an app in plain words, and it builds a working version you can click through. It cost me nothing to try, so I built just about anything I could think of.

Then Claude Code took off, and I started reading about it, then using it. It’s agentic coding: you describe the change, and AI agents write and run the code. Every project pulled me a little further in.

Now I want more than an app that works. I want to understand how it’s put together: how a React app is structured, what Next.js adds, where the data lives and how the pieces talk to each other. I want to be able to talk about code architecture with engineers in their terms, not only show them screens.

I also have a project to learn on. For years I’ve wanted a way for people at a bar, a restaurant or a café to change the music themselves: scan a code at the table, pick the next song, and hear it come on.

Learning to DJ made me think about it even more. A room always has opinions about the music, and there’s rarely a way to share them.

So that’s what I’m building first, one piece at a time. I’m looking forward to it.
